Invitation to Online Lecture: European Values and the Way We View Democracy

 

Matej Bel University invites you to an online lecture by Prof. Inge Sieben from Tilburg University, the Netherlands. The lecture is part of the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) within UMB Staff Week 2025, which focuses on Service-Learning in Higher Education and Engaged and Collaborative Learning.

 

What is the lecture about?
What are the most significant trends in European values? Drawing on the European Values Study, Prof. Sieben will present how values are measured, how they are changing over time, and how Europeans across countries and age groups perceive democracy. She will address key questions such as:

• Is democracy under pressure?
• Are there differences in (anti)democratic attitudes across Europe?
• Do younger or older people value democracy more?

The presentation will also introduce interactive tools and educational materials developed through the Erasmus+ projects European Values in Education and Teaching Controversial Issues.

 

About the speaker
Prof. Inge Sieben is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at Tilburg University. Her research focuses on values and value change in Europe, especially in the areas of morality, religion, and politics. She is co-author of the Atlas of European Values and is involved in several international projects that translate scientific insights into educational materials for secondary schools.
